Overview

Originally heralding from Nottingham, I completed an MSci in Physics at the University of Birmingham in July of 2017. My final year project at Birmingham focused on the analytical and computational modelling of multi-arm bowtie plasmonic nanoantennas when near field coupled to an oscillating dipole.

PhD Title: Plasmonic Metamaterials for Single Photon Sources and Quantum Technology.

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) will be central to this PhD since defects in this 2D material may act as sources of single photons.  The overall research objectives are to: decrease the radiative life-time associated with these defects, enhance defect excitation and to improve the collection efficiency through manipulation and directional control of the photons produced.  The aim is to use plasmonic devices to achieve these goals.

Six month Project:

The first stage of this PhD will be to characterise the photoluminescence of the defects and study how the defect emission differs when hBN is fabricated in differing environments, for example in proximity to a Solid Immersion Lens (SIL) or a mirror.
