We work with companies of different sizes at every stage of their innovation journey. We are using our knowledge grounded in exceptional research, combined with a breadth of industrial expertise.
ASM Assembly Systems Weymouth ltd is part of ASM SMT Solutions. ASM is one of the world's largest suppliers of SMT equipment. ASM solutions such as DEK printer platforms support the networking, optimisation, and automation of workflows with hardware, software, and services, thus enabling electronics manufacturers to make a step-by-step transition to the Smart Integrated SMT Factory with dramatic improvements in key figures/KPIs for productivity, flexibility, and quality.
University of Exeter and ASM Assembly Systems work together to develop innovative solutions that will push even further the performances of ASM's equipment. In particular, Prof Ion Sucala, Prof Saeema Ahmed-Kristensen and Dr Peter Melville-Shreeve are using modern innovation methods to help the company significantly improve its technology and products.
Dana TM4 designs and manufactures low- and high-voltage electric motors, generators, power electronics, and control systems suitable for the automotive, commercial, off-highway, marine, rail, motorsports, and recreational vehicle markets. Dana TM4 has expertise in permanent magnet and induction motors, power electronics, thermal management, coil winding, outer-rotor topology, and motor and inverter control algorithms.
Our academics Dr Martino Luis, Dr Shuya Zhong and Prof Ion Sucala work with Dana TM4 to create digital twins for the assembly line of the Internal Permanent Magnet Motor. The aim is to optimise assembly line performance such as cycle time, resource utilisation, idle time, throughput, and efficiency. What-if scenarios (e.g. equipment failure, material handling modes, absenteeism, bottlenecks, demand uncertainty, shortage of supply and re-layout workstations) are performed to build resilient, productive, and sustainable assembly lines.
The University of Exeter is a key partner of the Siemens Connected Curriculum initiative. As part of this initiative, Dr Martino Luis and Dr Baris Yuce from Exeter's Engineering Management group have helped Siemens pilot OT Specific Industrial Cyber Security content, as well as supporting Siemens engineering team with the development of Industrial IoT applications using Exeter’s Digital Enterprise Systems Lab (ExDES).

Smart Manufacturing ltd provides a comprehensive design, fabrication, sheet metal and machining range of services. The company's ability ranges from the profiling of CAD generated shapes using our in-house laser machine to the hand finishing of polished components. Smart Manufacturing ltd supplies clients from a wide range of industrial sectors, but its products and services are used to increase the efficiency of production lines in Pharma and Food sectors.
Our academics work with Smart Manufacturing since 2016. More than 30 undergraduate and Master students completed their final projects at Smart Manufacturing, getting first-hand experience in a real manufacturing environment and helping the company improve its processes. Our collaboration in applied research has been supported by Innovate UK through two Knowledge Transfer Partnership grants:
- KTP with Smart Manufacturing ltd to create and implement a dual-production business model and a novel simulation tool to enable the optimisation of multi production manufacturing flows (project completed). The academic team: Prof Voicu Ion Sucala and Dr Baris Yuce. KTP Associate: Sam John Abraham. This KTP has been awarded the highest grade 'Outstanding' by the KTP Grading Panel. - KTP with Smart Manufacturing ltd to develop and embed the capability to develop a novel Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation solution for the manufacture of complex bespoke manufacturing machinery. The academic team: Prof Voicu Ion Sucala, Prof Gavin Tabor and Dr Martino Luis.
