Professor Zoran Kapelan
Honorary Appointment
Professor Zoran Kapelan is an Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter where he worked 1999-2021. He is currently a Chair in Urban Water Infrastructure at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He is an IWA Fellow with over 30 years of research and consulting experience in water engineering. His research interests and expertise are centred on the development of novel engineering and informatics based methodologies addressing a wide range of issues in urban water systems (both water and wastewater). Professor Kapelan pioneered the award winning technology for automated detection of bursts, equipment failures and other events in distribution systems by using Artificial Intelligence and big data analytics in real-time. This technology is now used companywide in United Utilities benefiting its over 7 million customers and leading to major savings via reduced operational costs. He is/was the principal/co-investigator on more than 50 EU, RCUK, and industry funded projects. Prof. Kapelan is a member of the EWRI Emerging and Innovative Technologies Task Committee, the ASCE WDSA Standing Committee and multiple IWA specialist and other groups. He is currently serving as an Editor for the Journal of Water Resources Planning and Management (ASCE) and Associate Editor for the Water Resources Research. Prof. Kapelan has given keynotes and invited talks around the world and has over 500 technical publications with an H-index of 59.
