Dr Matt Eames
Senior Lecturer
Engineering
Dr Matt Eames is a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. He is internationally recognised for his work in building performance analysis and specifically in the interaction between the external climate, climate change, building energy demand and thermal comfort within buildings.
Dr Matt Eames graduated from the University of Exeter in 2002 (BSc Theoretical Physics) followed by a PhD in Quantum Mechanics in 2006 also from Exeter. He then spent two years developing inverse modelling techniques for medical imaging applications including the detection and characterisation of breast cancer. Matt has worked in the field of Building Physics since 2008 initially as a research fellow within the Centre for Energy and Environment before joining the Engineering department as a senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in 2016. Matt specialises in the interaction between climate and weather and the built environment with the focus on energy use of the built environment and thermal comfort within buildings especially in the light of the potential impact of climate change. Matt is an author or co-author of more than 50 scientific publications, as well as being a co-author of chapter 2 of CIBSE’s guide A: Environment design (2015). Matt is the twice winner of the Napier Shaw Bronze medal and is a Fellow of the International Building Performance Simulation Association. His work is fundamental to building regulations in the UK and his work underpins Overheating: Approved Document O, the draft of GLA’s London plan, CIBSE’s TM59: Design methodology for the assessment of overheating risk in homes and BREEAM HE04 assessments.
Matt is always open to hearing from prospecitve PhD students who are interested in topics related to building performance analysis, building energy demand, thermal comfort.
