Dr Shuhang Shen
Senior Lecturer
Engineering
Dr. Shuhang Shen is a Senior Lecturer in Smart Grid at the Centre for Smart Grid in the Department of Enginnering, University of Exeter. He is the Programme Director of BEng and MEng Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which is ranked 2nd in the UK in EEE subject according to the latest Guardian University Guide 2026.
He obtained MSc in Electrical Engineering from Politecnico di Milano, Italy and Xi'an Jiaotong University, China in 2016, and PhD in Electrical Power Engineering from the University of Manchester in 2020. He is a member of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and IET(Institute of Engineering and Technology).
Research Summary
His research interests and expertise focuses on condition monitoring of power equipment, using power system modelling techniques to study the impacts of the integration of renewable energies on the power system, and the coordinated optimisation of power system planning, operation, and control, aiming to translate individual asset performance into enhanced system-level performance.
Shuhang's research focuses include:
- Power system modelling and simulation
- Digitalisation of power equipment and system
- Integration of renewable energies
- Impact of low carbon technologies on power networks
- Resilience of future power networks
He recently completed two industry-funded projects: 'Impact of integrating Battery Energy Storage System' and 'Feasibility of six-phase transmission system to increase power transfer capability to cope with future energy scenarios', both funded by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET).
He is currently working on projects funded by NGET and Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute Europe (GEIRI). He also works closely with National Energy System Operator (NESO) and Distribution Network Operators (DNOs)
