Mr Ceri Howells
Senior Lecturer
Engineering
Ceri is a Senior Lecturer in Engineering & Entrepreneurship and Director of Education (Stage 1) in the University of Exeter’s Department of Engineering. His work centres on inclusive, student-centred engineering education that prepares students to thrive in complex, real-world contexts.
Ceri designs and leads challenge-based modules that integrate problem-based learning, design thinking and entrepreneurial approaches, helping students develop technical competence alongside professional judgement, communication, teamwork and reflective practice.
As Director of Education (Stage 1), Ceri leads our Common Stage 1 programme, curriculum enhancement and delivery with a focus on improving student experience, building cohesive learning journeys and ensuring provision remains aligned with contemporary engineering practice.
A core strand of Ceri’s work is widening participation and public engagement. He develops outreach initiatives that connect schools, communities and industry partners to broaden access to engineering, raise aspirations and challenge stereotypes—often through sustainability-led projects that demonstrate how engineering can create positive social, environmental and economic impact.
His academic background in integrated engineering, sustainable energy and environmental protection feed into the technical aspects of the new modules as well as providing students with the skills and mindset required to keep up to date with rapidly evolving technology.
Ceri has also been lead academic for the Elevate competition, funded by the Sainsbury's Engineers in Business Fellowship.
