Next up in our 'Water they up to: CWS in the Spotlight' series is Postgraduate Researcher, Faten Ayyash.
What is your research about?
It’s all about the sustainable transition from Intermittent Water Supply (IWS) to Continuous Water Supply (CWS). This research is significant for developing countries that suffer from intermittency in water supply. The latter has negative effects for utility companies, consumers, and society. This research aims to develop sustainable solutions for the major problems of IWS, and the ability to implement a multi-staged transition from IWS systems to CWS systems.
What is the most exciting part about your research?
I believe that there are several different exciting parts about my research. Firstly, working with my qualified supervisor who has a good background in water distribution networks. Secondly, the limitations in research and studies relating to IWS make my topic very significant and challenging. Lastly, the new skills that I will attain during my PhD journey which will improve my background and experience.
When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?
The Gaza Strip in Palestine! This place suffers from poor drinking water quality, insufficient quantity and numerous diseases, especially amongst children. Therefore, this region needs rapid and permanent solutions for the intermittency in water supply in order to mitigate the detrimental consequences of this situation.
Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?
Tom Walski, the senior product manager for water and wastewater products for Bentley Systems. He has authored several books and several hundred journal papers and conference presentations. He was named one of the 50 icons of the water industry over the past 50 years by Water and Wastes magazine. He has numerous awards for his work, such as the best distribution and plant operation paper in the journal AWWA on three occasions.
