Yuxiao Wang - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight

In this month's 'Water they up to: CWS in the Spotlight' feature, we hear from Postgraduate Researcher Yuxiao Wang.

What is your research about?

My research is mainly focused on the study of hydraulic fracturing by using extended finite element method (XFEM). I have developed my own methods to study the propagations of single and multiple cracks based on XFEM. These are then are applied to the modelling of hydraulic fracturing by proposing an algorithm for the coupling of two types of media (rock and fluid flow).

What is the most exciting part about your research?

The most exciting part about my research is achieving good results from running my models. When I build up a model using my own developed code, it usually takes a long time to debug and I always hope that I can achieve a faster result each time.

When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?

When thinking about water, the first place comes to mind is the United Kingdom, particularly Exeter. Since I have been living in Exeter for several years now, the main impression I get is that it rains a lot, for most of days of the year! This is in strong contrast to my hometown, where it is dry for most of the year...!

Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?

In terms of a movie or book character in relation to water, the first image I think of is 'Siren'. As you may know, 'Siren' can provoke huge surges of waves to overthrow the travelling ships and boats by singing. She used to be in my nightmares when I was a kid!
