Xi Wan - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight

Postgraduate Researcher Xi Wan is next up in our 'Water the up to: CWS in the Spotlight' Series.

What is your research about?

My research is about data analytics for smart water systems operation and management with a focus on leakage detection and localisation. It involves the application of statistical analysis and machine learning techniques to analyse the big data collected from water distribution systems.

What is the most exciting part about your research?

First of all, I feel very honoured to have the opportunity to work alongside professionals and specialists within CWS. The work environment is incredible. Secondly, data analytics involves extensive knowledge, and I find great satisfaction in learning new things. Furthermore, leakage detection and localisation is a really important issue in today’s society, and I enjoy the process of solving problems.

When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?

A creek behind my cousin's old house. Partly, because I almost drowned there once (!) but it is in fact a really beautiful small river and I have fond childhood memories of us always playing in the creek.

Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?

I would like to say ‘The Shape of Water’. This film is about a mute cleaner at a high-security government laboratory who falls in love with a captured humanoid amphibian creature.
