New H2020 project Aqua3S kicks off
The Centre for Water Systems (CWS), University of Exeter together with 22 other European partners met in Thessaloniki, Greece on 25-26th September 2019 to launch the Aqua3S project.
Aqua3S is funded by the European Commission under the H2020-SU-SEC-2018: Pre-normative research and demonstration for disaster-resilient societies theme.
The Aqua3S project aims to integrate a series of state-of-the-art technological achievements from multidisciplinary fields to establish an effective detection system and standardisation strategies, which will provide early warning and support decision making for enhanced safety and security in existing water networks.
The outcomes of this project will improve the way in which water authorities and companies are aware of problems in order to enhance security in water networks. Through the facilitation of innovative technical solutions, Aqua3S will standardise existing sensor technologies complemented by state-of-the-art detection mechanisms, enabling productive crisis management. The inclusion of new communication technologies through Aqua3S will strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of information exchanging across different devices or services.
The Aqua3S consortium consists of 23 partners from 11 European countries with diverse backgrounds, including first responder organisations, water authorities, water utility operators, public security agencies, academics, and SMEs specialised in techniques, dissemination, and ethical and legal issues. The project is coordinated by the Information Technologies Institute, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH) in Thessaloniki.
Dr Lydia Vamvakeridou-Lyroudia, CWS is the Scientific Manager of the Aqua3S project to oversee the research progress and ensure the quality of deliverables. The other CWS members involved in this project include Dr Albert Chen, Prof Slobodan Djordjevic, Prof Dragan Savic, Dr Mehdi Khoury, Dr Barry Evans, Dr Kate Baker, Dr Fanlin Meng and Dr Chris Sweetapple.
The CWS team will lead the research activities to build early warning and decision support systems, contribute to crowdsourcing and social media monitoring, as well as developing algorithms for threat detection and localisation in the existing water networks.
Aqua3S is a three year project (2019-2022) with a total budget of €6.85M, funded by the European Commission (Grant Agreement 832876). The University of Exeter's (CEMPS/CWS) budget is €528K.
