Surface water flooding
University of Exeter collaborates with Pell Frishmann
Professors Kapelan and Savic are starting a new research project with Pell-Frischmann, the consulting engineering firm which has a presence here in Exeter.
Increasing population, urbanisation and climate change are putting additional pressure on sewers by reducing their capacity to manage surface water. That means there is an increased risk of flooding and pollution of the environment. Having a good deal of the UK’s natural capital, these issues are of particular importance here in the South West. The overall aim of the project is to develop an innovative, planning methodology and a tool for strategic level prioritisation of areas for SuDS implementation (SuDS is a sustainable drainage system). Case studies will be used to validate the tool and assess the related impact in the region. The project is called “Assessment of potential for large scale implementation of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) in the South West”. It is part of the NERC “South West Partnership for Environment and Economic Prosperity (SWEEP)” research programme.
