Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight - Mikkel Bue Lykkegaard

What is your research about?

I am a second year PhD student with the WISE CDT, which I joined because of its broad portfolio of high-quality research. My research is mainly concerned with probabilistic groundwater flow modelling - a topic that I am personally invested in for many reasons. Most importantly, I hope that my research can help improve the management of this elusive and vulnerable freshwater resource, that many communities globally rely on.

What is the most exciting part about your research?

I have learned so much since I started my PhD! I love learning new things, and it is amazing to have the time and resources to study something thoroughly.

When talking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?

Does frozen water count? The Greenland Ice Sheet (Greenlandic: Sermersuaq - the big glacier). I grew up in Greenland and have visited the glaciers a couple of times. Not only is the ice sheet a breathtaking natural phenomenon, but it is also an obvious indicator of global warming that should inspire action.

Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?

Well, the Norse god 'Njörðr' is the first that comes to mind. He is the god of the sea and the father of the more well-known fertility gods Freyr and Freyja. He is said to have had the nicest feet of all the Norse gods, since he was always walking barefoot along the shore!
