Ramiz Beig Zali - Water They Up To: CWS in the Spotlight

We hear from Postgraduate Researcher Ramiz Beig Zali in our first 'Water they up to: CWS in the Spotlight' feature of 2023.

What is your research about?

For humans a century ago, creating a water distribution network was essential, but now, maintaining the WDN and minimising water loss are the top priority. My study focuses mostly on the analysis and prediction of water distribution network failures. I used the finite element method a lot in my profession as a civil engineer, designing and numerically analysing structures. My study is briefly described as pipeline modelling and AI application in WDNs.

What is the most exciting part about your research?

The phrase "non-destructive test" has always held a special meaning for me. The most thrilling aspect of my research involves analysing pipes and keeping track of them. I do this by creating realistic models of the pipes and conducting as many tests as I can to lead them to collapse. In this situation, destroying a pipe under various conditions is much more exciting. Testing every situation in which a pipe may break and using the artificial intelligence to assist you is also a tremendous amount of fun.

When thinking about water, what place comes to mind first and why?

Water! Oh mine. I prefer not to use clichés like "its wellspring of life" or similar expressions because they are self-evident and widely accepted. I associate water with peace and purity, which may change your mood not just by looking at it or feeling it but also just by hearing it. 

Which movie or book character would you most associate with water?

“The sea is only the embodiment of a supernatural and wonderful existence. It is nothing but love and emotion; it is the `Living Infinite, ′ as one of your poets has said.” Captain Nemo once stated in the novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea'. I do not have much to say when I just travel in the "Nautilus" in my imagination.
