Welcome to the Engineering Research Image Competition 2023! This prestigious event is dedicated to celebrating the beauty, creativity, and innovation embedded within the world of engineering. Our mission is to foster enthusiasm and engagement in engineering by providing a platform for research students and early-career researchers to showcase their exceptional projects through captivating images and visuals. Join us as we highlight the transformative impact of engineering on society and the environment, illustrating the power and potential of this incredible field.

Location: The Forum, Streatham Campus

Eligibility

  • The competition is open to all engineering research students and early career researchers.
  • Only one entry is allowed per participant.
  • Images must be high-resolution (minimum 300 dpi) and in either JPEG or TIFF format.
  • Descriptions should not exceed 150 words and must clearly convey the image's connection to the participant's engineering research.
  • Submissions must be original work and not infringe upon any intellectual property rights.

Judging and assessment

Criteria

  • The difference that your research making the society
  • Creativity – images having a strong visual impact
  • Storytelling – a compelling narrative behind the image and/or the research

Judging process

  • Moderation – submissions will be moderated initially against how well they fit within the theme due to the limited exhibition space available. Those not being progressed will be informed at this stage.
  • Review – submissions will be reviewed by the judges to put forward for exhibition.
  • Voting and Judging – The images selected for exhibition will undergo both public voting and judging by a panel of experts during the Engineering Research Image Competition exhibition. The winning entries will be announced on Thursday 29 June 2023 at the Forum Street on Streatham campus, University of Exeter. Please note that attendance at this event is not necessary to win the competition.

Key dates

Competition launches: May 3, 2023
Submission deadline: 5pm, Friday 9 June 2023

Prizes

The 1st place winner will be awarded a £150 Amazon voucher, the 2nd place winner will receive a £100 Amazon voucher, and the 3rd place winner will receive a £50 Amazon voucher.

Engineering Research Images Exhibition 2023 

The images will be exhibited on Thursday 29 June 2023 at Forum Street on Streatham campus.

Image considerations

Subject Limitations:

Entries depicting nudity or illegal activities will not be accepted. The judges hold the sole discretion to disqualify and remove any submissions that are deemed inappropriate or unsuitable for publication from the competition.

Copyright Statement:

By submitting photographs to the University of Exeter Engineering Research Image Competition, participants acknowledge and agree that the University of Exeter retains the right to use all submitted photographs for promotional and educational purposes, including those that are not chosen to win prizes, without further permission from or compensation to the participant. Participants will be given credit if their images are reproduced. The University expects all images to be original and created by the participant or by someone who has given permission for their use and has been credited. Images obtained from the internet do not qualify. The source of the image must be stated in the entry form. The participant retains the copyright to their images.

Liability Statement:

By entering the University of Exeter Engineering Research Image Competition, participants consent to the use of their name, biographical information, winning entry, and any statements attributed to them or photographs of them taken subsequently for promotional purposes without additional compensation. Participants grant the University of Exeter a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce works based on their submissions without any obligation to compensate them. The University of Exeter will not be liable in any way for any submission. It is the responsibility of the photographer to obtain written permission from identifiable persons in their photographs. Participants represent and warrant to the University of Exeter that they are the sole and exclusive owner of their submission or have all rights and authority to grant the described rights to the University. They also confirm that they have obtained all necessary releases from all persons depicted in the submission or their legal guardians.
