Overview
I am looking forward to contributing to the transformation of civil engineering in the next decades, as required by the challenges imposed by global warming; the extensive lack of basic infrastructure worldwide, particularly in the Global South; and exploding deficits. These factors make the development of economical, sustainable, and resilient infrastructure, critical. For that purpose, I envision developing novel strategies for the monitoring of infrastructure and its surroundings to check pre-emptively for structural degradation and soil instability; and provide early warnings for threatening phenomena like settlements, rockfalls and landslides. Dr Andres Alonso-Rodriguez
I aim to make infrastructure more resilient, sustainable, and cost-effective to maximise its societal utility, considering the challenges imposed by climate change and pervasive geological hazards, particularly earthquakes. I am contributing to this goal by optimising the use of high-environmental-impact construction materials; developing methods for improving the understanding of the structural behaviour of structures; advocating for considering uncertainty in the planning and execution of infrastructure projects and, exploring the use of Big-Data to formulate digital twins that ease the real-time management of the built environment whilst tracking potential natural risks originating around them.
