Overview

I am a postgraduate researcher working in the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Metamaterials (XM2). The title of my PhD project is "Magneto-elastic metamaterials for lab-on-a-chip technology" and is supervised by Prof. Feodor Ogrin, Dr. Stefano Pagliara and Prof. Francesca Palombo. The aim is to develop a new class of low Reynolds pumps integrated within microfluidic devices for use in low-cost, portable, point-of-care medical devices.

Over the course of this project we have published an experimental study into a miniaturised pumping system integrated within a microfluidic device and have had the privilege of presenting our findings at international conferences. We have also been working to verify this study through the use of numerical simulations, which will be used to further our fundamental understanding of the system.

This work is supported by an additional project, developing a filter-less system for separating blood cells from plasma, using only macroscopic fabrication techniques. The aim is to enable high throughput blood separation for use within rapid diagnostic devices which may be used in tandem with our miniaturised pumps.
