Background
Rosie Cobley obtained a BEng. with first class honours in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in 1973 from University of Wales Institute of Science & Technology, Cardiff (UWIST). During a spell working as a Graduate Engineer for Lucas Research Centre in Solihull, West Midlands and a System Engineer for Lucas Logic, Warwick, she also completed a Ph.D in Computer Aided Design and Automated Testing of Digital Circuits, in 1981. She took up the Lectureship in Computer Aided Design at Exeter in 1983 and taught electronic advanced modules in VLSI design and 3D Computer Aided Design (using software suites from Autodesk: AutoCAD, 3DSmax, Architectural Desktop) until 2008. Her research has focused on the Automated Testing and Design for Testability of integrated mixed signal circuits.
She had also acted as a consultant on locally based projects related to 2D and 3D computer aided design and animation, ranging from solar modelling & analysis for the Met Office to Roman Exeter for the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter.
Research Interests
Her current research interests are the design, development and characterisation of new types of memory and data storage materials, devices and systems. This has involved working with Prof David Wright for Data Storage Network projects on Phase Change memories and more recently on developing systems to use Phase Change devices for cognitive computing. This work falls within the Centre for Electromagnetic Materials Research. Additionally her interest in carbon based transistor device research falls within the Graphene Science Centre. Both are part of the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
Other Relevant Information
Dr Cobley is a Chartered Electronic Engineer, a member of IET and a fellow of the HE Academy and the IEEE. She has refereed numerous articles for the IEEE Electron Devices publications.
Dr Cobley has been External Examiner for VLSI courses at Bournemouth University and examined PhD theses at the universities of Leeds, Kent, Hull and Bath.
