Infrastructure and Built Environment

More of 50% of the world’s population lives in cities, making the built environment responsible for the emission of more than 14 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent every year. Our research delivers solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the built environment and to improve its liveability.

We investigate design methods, novel materials, and monitoring systems for resilient and sustainable infrastructures. We pioneer models and methods for preparedness, adaptation and mitigation to future constraints on infrastructures. Our Centre for Water Systems is a world leader in sustainable water systems management. 

Our research teams within the Theme work on smart building technologies and materials, vibrations, building simulation, and bridge scour.

We have access to laboratories for structural and geotechnical testing, and a 14m long recirculating flume for simulating sediment transport that is currently used for investigating flow around bridge piers.
